Wearing Uniforms to Work
Dear Business Leaders,
Professionalism in the business world is a highly sought after skill. Employers look for employees that are professional. There are many things that would make a person look professional. Clothing is one of them. Different occupations require different categories of clothing. Being a nurse you will look more clean and professional wearing a white lab coat, but being a painter you would look better wearing jeans and a t-shirt.
To enforce employees to look professional, a dress code is required. Without a dress code it may be confusing to the employees whether their clothing is professional or not. Many customers will have a hard time seeking help from an associate if they look exactly the same as the customers. Having a dress code also saves time. It decreases the amount of time managers may need to address dress code guidelines.
Setting the guidelines for occupational attire shapes the image that is projected to a customer. In order to act the part, you have to look the part. When the guidelines are outlined, it will eliminate confusion and set a clear precedent on company expectations. Having a dress code will eliminate conflict within a group of employees because they will all be wearing the same type of clothing.
Dress codes may prevent an employee from expressing themselves. Many say that their job doesn’t require a dress code due to the fact that they don’t interact with a customer face to face. Employees may feel that they have no freedom on what they want to wear at work. Dress codes are developed to prevent employees from wearing inappropriate clothing and limits the selection of clothing to a minimum selection. To many employees they think that is unfair for those who have not wore anything inappropriate.
In the business world, dress codes saves time, prevents confusion, and sets clear expectations. It allows the business to look more professional to the customers and it sets the theme for the job. Dress codes can boost the confidence level of an employee at a job when they feel the part. It plays an important role in projecting the image of the whole business not just a piece of it. Providing guidelines to employees helps them clear their confusion on looking professional for the job.
